Doggie on My Doorstep Fabric SnowmanFor our production of Doggie, our actor needed to build a snowman live on stage. He and the dog playfully rolled the snowballs on and off stage, returning each time with progressively larger pieces from the wings until the snowman was complete. Since real snow wasn’t an option, I constructed the pieces using a supportive muslin lining and a white fur fabric that mimicked the texture of snow.
Each snowball was designed like a beach ball—I created templates in three different sizes, cut the fabric, and used a serger to assemble the spherical shapes. I left a 3-inch opening to turn them right-side out and fill them with soft padding. After stuffing, I closed each opening and added Velcro to the tops and bottoms so the snowman could securely stack and stay together once assembled onstage. Clyde’s laundry hampersI created two laundry hampers to fit the metal frames we had in stock. I created the pattern from scratch, including embroidered buttonholes and a drawstring closure. It is fabricated with duck cloth and surged edges with cotton cording for the drawstring. It was distressed using tea staining. The metal frames were painted to look rusty.
